We had the chance to see and preview Niels “Shoe” Meulman upcoming solo exhibition at White Walls Gallery San Francisco. It was a pleasure to see the work in person and get a feel for not only the visual but more importantly the reality and weight of the work. Working on unprimed Belgian Linen the work is painted wet on dry giving the paintings a watercolor feel. Pigment is allowed to soak and spread through the canvas creating deeper hues. The linen being a natural neutral color works well with the black Calligraffiti style Shoe is known for. It also allows for a nice highlight giving a full range of contrast. The work progresses from readable to abstract, patterns of marks and perfectly hand painted letters create one of the most impressive bodies of work from Shoe to date. We strongly suggest you make the trip and see these paintings in person if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman
Unism
July 06 – August 10, 2013

White Walls is pleased to present Unism, the latest solo show by internationally acclaimed Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulmam, opening July 6, 2013 from 7-11pm. The exhibition will be on view through August 10, 2013 and is free and open to the public.

After he coined the term Calligraffiti to describe his work in 2007, artist Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman (Amsterdam, 1967) returns to San Francisco with a new phrase and eponymous exhibition: Unism (pronounced un-ism, not u-nism).

Especially for this exhibition a 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine will be transported from New York City to San Francisco. This six-door limo was painted by Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman and presented at the notorious Wynwood Walls during Art Basel Miami 2012. The hood, trunk and other pieces will be sold as separate pieces during the exhibition.
