Morik and Aber

In our latest Artist feature we introduce you to the work of Russian artist Morik. Morik’s work is a mixture of letter based and figurative based work. Working in gestural as well as geometric forms Morik is able to balance these 2 opposite forms. With a background in graffiti Morik’s recent work expands on more abstract and figurative elements. It is interesting to watch today’s artist shed their traditional letter based work for pure abstract and figurative. Utilizing the same principles and rhythm Morik breaks apart and deconstructs his subject adding his own gesture and mark. When you mix this wildstyle nature with photorealist elements you get an intriguing result. You can also see the experimentation taking place first hand in his work pushing farther with each wall or painting. You can see these natural progressions and growth take place in the artists recent work. Morik is another example of a graffiti artist turning his aim towards new subjects and inspirations. With an established skill set and history in graffiti Morik has used this to his advantage creating a contemporary aesthetic built on modern terms. Here is a quote from the artist about his work. “I started as graffiti writer who was between wild style and the third dimensional style. Furthermore I combined stylewriting with photorealism and half-realistic weird characters. Now I’m getting to the mixture of everything I’ve ever did: mixture of photorealistic elements, typographics in which my graffiti experience is moving me to. Furthermore, I put a lot of detailed effects and abstract forms, as you can see in my last drawings. As for the ideas, I’m more about expressive drawing, forms, colors, graphic design than about stories and messages. Sometimes, of course, there is always an exception.”.
