Clemens Behr traveled to Portugal to exhibit a new body of work as well as paint a large scale mural. The exhibition “Samples and Variations” featured all new work from the artist as he continues his progression from installations towards a more diverse range of mediums. As is normal with Clemens he constructed and installed all the work on site made in residence for the exhibition. By working from scratch in the exhibition space Clemens takes his palette from local construction materials. This palette is not just color but texture and form. What is exciting to watch is the blurring of installation, sculpture, and painting in his work. Objects are used to create paintings, and sculptures are collaged together creating impressive reliefs that transcend the element of painting and replace the surface of paint with a generic surface not intended for aesthetic purposes. This contradiction in the use of material is present in most of the work. A set of framed photograph collages give some insight into the artists inspiration from street elements that are deconstructed and reconstructed not only in the photographs but the work and installation. Great exhibition!
